I just saw X-Men 3. Kate and The Dude enjoyed it. I did to some extent, but at one point I had to declare shenanigans.
Plot Spoiler Warning: Don’t read any further if you haven’t seen the movie.
Did anyone that helped write the script ever read any X-Men comics or consult someone that has? Stan Lee of course has a cameo in the movie, but did they show him the script before filming? Just like every movie about a comic book, they deviate heavily from the original story. But sometimes they go too far. I didn’t like the way they portrayed The Phoenix, but it was somewhat close to the original story. However, they completely jumped the shark with Juggernaut.
First of all, Juggernaut is Xavier’s stepbrother. Xavier grew up with Cain Marko, the man who became Juggernaut and was present when Cain began transforming into the Juggernaut. The movie of course makes no mention of this. His transformation was not a mutation, it was caused by a mystical ruby he found in an ancient temple that he and Xavier discovered.
During the final battle in the movie, Juggernaut tries to kidnap a mutant child with the involuntary ability to suppress the abilities of any mutant near him. Kitty Pryde finds the child first and tries to escape with the child by phasing and walking through the wall with him, but she discovers her abilities won’t work around the boy. Juggernaut then crashes through a wall and charges the two. Kitty grabs the child and they dodge the attack, resulting in Juggernaut smashing into a wall and being knocked unconscious apparently because his mutant ability was suppressed by the child. But that doesn’t make sense. Juggernaut is not a mutant. He doesn’t have the mutant gene.
Kate and The Dude didn’t think this was a big deal, but I am compelled to speak up.
I think you could make sense of it. The ruby could have simply triggered the mutation or brought out some latent abilities. What I do not understand is if they go through all the trouble of locking up the juggernaut the way they did, why not get the metal suit off of him so he is not as dangerous once he breaks out? And at the end, I wish Wolverine would have poked Jean with a few of the needles instead of just killing her. That seemed like an obvious option. If he really loved her, he would have thought of it.
They did it for Magneto, but not Jean. Lame.
