Out of Town

I’m once again away for two weeks. I’m at Sheppard AFB this time, which is in Texas. It’s located next to a pathetic city called Wichita Falls. I call it the “Armpit of America”. That’s being nice. If you’ve ever been here you know how terrible this town is. The only place I’ve been to for military training that is worse is Fort Sill, which is in Lawton, Oklahoma about 45 minutes north of Wichita Falls. Go figure, the two worst places I’ve ever been and they’re next to each other.

Rebuilding New Orleans

Filed under: National News, Politics — Steven A. Stehling @ 12:31

It’s been suggested that Jimmy Carter should be put in charge of rebuilding New Orleans. I’ll never understand the love affair some people have with that man. He must have a great PR team that hasn’t gotten to me yet, because I despise that man. But why do I hate him?

I’ll take a look at an event from recent history, the North Korea nuke deal. I never liked Bill Clinton, but he was the President at the time and therefore ultimately the one person to make a deal on behalf of America. But Jimmy Carter thought differently. He took it upon himself to fly over to North Korea and start working out a deal to stop North Korea from building nuclear weapons. This put Clinton in a corner. He couldn’t come out against Carter. Democrats, liberals and everyone else in love with Carter wouldn’t appreciate Clinton telling Carter to butt out. So we end up with a deal that stunk. It stunk when it was first created and years later when it was discovered that North Korea never stopped building nukes, we found out just how much it stunk. The stink didn’t stick to Carter though. I have no idea why. It was his deal. He basically smiled and then paid North Korea a bribe for something they never intended to do. No accountability, no follow-through.

That’s the idiot some want rebuilding New Orleans. They already have two idiots down there, Governor Blanco and Mayor Nagin, they don’t need another. I’m waiting for the Louisiana legislature to get off their heels and remove Blanco from office. I have no idea how well the Lt. Governor will handle things, but it would be difficult to handle things worse than Blanco has so far.

The Daily Show

Filed under: General, Politics — Steven A. Stehling @ 12:00

Ann Althouse has stopped watching The Daily Show. She explains why at her blog. She also asks when everyone else stopped watching.

That’s a great question. I never got into the habit of watching that show every day. I usually saw it a couple times a week. It was funny. It took jabs at everyone. Last year my lease expired a month before I went overseas, so I lived in a camper at the KOA. That was when I stopped watching, no more cable. Of course I did have the opportunity to watch The Daily Show overseas. The trailer home I lived in had cable, so the roommate and I bought a TV. The only problem with the cable is that it was controlled by the host nation. We had a selection of channels, but they sometimes changed channel assignment. That might be confusing, so I’ll explain that further. If I was watching channel 40 before leaving to work it would be Discovery International, I might come back from work and now channel 40 is showing The Travel Channel. The host nation controlled the switchbox and would censor some shows by simply turning off that channel and putting something else in its place, which is reasonable, if you’re in another country you have to accept that they make the rules and have cultural norms different than our own.

But anyways, the swapping of channels often meant it was difficult to watch some networks. Luckily some channels never changed, so I spent most of the time watching those. It was always frustrating to be watching something and suddenly they pull the network, so you learn to anticipate that and avoid shows that might offend them.

I obviously came back from overseas and once again had cable in my home, but never got back into watching The Daily Show. I tried, but they lost touch with the “slam everybody” genre. It became more of a “bash Bush” hour, which I could take, but they weren’t even joking anymore. The “joke” you could watch on The Daily Show would be the same argument people seriously tried to argue. The Daily Show became a moonbat echo chamber. You could pick up a paper and read “Bush did this”. Then go get a drink at the Union and hear, “Bush did this”. Then go home, turn on The Daily Show and hear “Bush did this”. The next day there’s another article in the paper quoting a celebrity or some Congress Democrat saying “Bush did this”. Why bother watching The Daily Show if I’m already going to hear or read the joke several times anyways?

Basically The Daily Show has become marginalized and I’m no longer part of the target market. Jon Stewart needs to start spending time with a more diverse crowd. Maybe then he’ll realize his show is loosing steam.

USS New York, NEVER AGAIN!

Filed under: National News — Steven A. Stehling @ 15:16

The USS New York, LPD-21, still under construction and docked at Avondale, Louisiana may be seriously damaged from the hurricane. Her bow stem was cast from steel salvaged from the World Trade Center. She is a San Antonio Class Amphibious Transport Dock Ship for the Marine Corps and was scheduled to be completed in 2007. The motto for the USS New York is “Never Again!”

Local Government Fails Louisiana

Filed under: National News, Politics — Steven A. Stehling @ 13:25

The Governor of Louisiana, Kathleen Blanco, blocked the American Red Cross from bringing food, water and other supplies to the evacuees at the Superdome during the height of their suffering.

(WorldNetDaily) The Louisiana governor’s office of Homeland Security explained to the Red Cross that they didn’t want the relief supplies, because they wanted the evacuees to leave, according to Garrett.

Of course many of the people stranded at the Superdome could have been evacuated before the hurricane hit if the Mayor Ray Nagin followed Louisiana Emergency Operations Plan and used the school district buses instead of leaving them to fill with water.

Unused New Orleans Buses

(EMERGENCY OPERATIONS PLAN SUPPLEMENT 1A) The primary means of hurricane evacuation will be personal vehicles. School and municipal buses, government-owned vehicles and vehicles provided by volunteer agencies may be used to provide transportation for individuals who lack transportation and require assistance in evacuating.

Go ahead and read the Louisiana Emergency Operations Plan. It’s interesting that they had a plan, but didn’t follow it. That’s good leadership.
