Blanco, go directly to GO, collect $200 Billion

Filed under: National News, Politics — Steven A. Stehling @ 10:24

I’m pissed.

Why is it Governor Blanco gets a free pass from Congress, but everyone else so far has been criticized, squeezed and probed? Just because her state needs help right now doesn’t mean she shouldn’t have to answer questions about her performance. Ask her the hard questions. Get her on record, then, if appropriate, authorize the funding. Just because she’s an idiot, does not mean grants, loans and other financial support shouldn’t be offered to Louisiana. By no means hold back funding because she’s an idiot, just closely monitor the funds so she doesn’t abuse them. But to bring her in front of Congress and then not ask about the mistakes she made is nothing less than irresponsible.

Congress is playing Monopoly and I can guess what they’ll give her next.

The Anchoress takes a shot at the RNC for going along with this fraud.

DeLay Indictment

Filed under: National News, Politics — Steven A. Stehling @ 9:03

Captain Ed over at Captain’s Quarters sums up the DeLay indictment very well. Liberals are almost cheering in the streets right now. Why are they cheering? The charges are brought by an obvious partisan activist whose been caught attempting to use the courts to attack the opposition once before already. Also interesting is what DeLay is charged with. Both the Democratic Party and the Republican Party used the same trick in Texas during that election. Was this trick against the law? Did they know that? Why are just the Republicans charged?

This indictment may end up hurting DeLay, but it will also pull DA Ronnie Earle and the Democratic Party of Texas into a storm. No one is probably going to come out of this mess smelling like roses, but I think it’s going to damage the Democrats more than the Republicans. If you’re going to use your legal attack dog to take down the opposition, make sure he doesn’t quote laws that you also break. It makes you look arrogant and stupid.

UPDATE: USS New York

Filed under: National News — Steven A. Stehling @ 3:05

Here’s an update to my post about the condition of the USS New York after Hurricane Katrina.

There have been no reports of significant damage to the ships under construction at the Avondale shipyard. The Northrup Grumman Gulfport Facility is operational again and is preparing to begin construction of the Coast Guard Fast Response Cutter. Everything appears to be either on schedule or only slightly delayed. That’s good news for the company, the workers and the taxpayers, since we’ve paid for those ships.

Jet Blue Flight 292

Filed under: General, Politics — Steven A. Stehling @ 2:37

Jet Blue Flight 292I think it’s long overdue that an award be created for civilian pilots that distinguish themselves by exceptional performance of their duties, especially when such acts save the lives of their passengers or people on the ground.

The military has an award for exceptional achievement in the performance of aerial flight. It’s called the Distinguished Flying Cross. It has been awarded to civilians, but only by special acts of Congress since the award is designated for military personnel only. Instead of awarding the Distinguished Flying Cross to the Jet Blue pilots through a special act of Congress, an award strictly for civilian pilots should be created.

There’s no reason their shouldn’t be a civilian aviation award. And no reason those Jet Blue pilots shouldn’t be awarded it. Sure some credit for the successful landing belongs to the engineers that designed the aircraft to withstand such a landing, but ultimately it was up to those pilots to keep their cool, run through checklists and then control the aircraft to the best of their ability. They performed superbly. I dare say perfectly.

Call your Federal representatives and tell them you want a civilian equivalent of the Distinguished Flying Cross created and awarded to the Jet Blue pilots that landed flight 292.
